6 Ways to Lead in the New Year According to Tarantino
Trill or Not Trill?
The new year is approaching and so is a new Quentin Tarantino movie. We’ve seen a number of ways all over the internet to prepare for 2016. As student leaders it’s important to come back prepared and raring to go. Tarantino has had some great movies along the years and a few of them provide some great leadership tips to get you prepped and ready.
Stay focused
If you’re a student leader. Always remember you’re a student first. Set your priorities for the new semester right now. Create a list and don’t let detractors deviate you from the path. They won’t be any breaking of your concentration once you’ve got your plan in hand. Study effectively and lead with vigor.
Get better at what you already do well.
Avoid being stagnant. Whether you’re learning a new skill or improving on something familiar, effort is the key. As a student leader or a professional, talent will take you but so far. Know about your club more than anyone else. Gain a high level of comprehension of all the ins and outs of your job and responsibilities. The only way to achieve that is by practice and dedication towards your goals and craft. Take things seriously and you’ll get serious results.
Always remain authentic
We preach authenticity at Trill or Not Trill. As our good friend James Robilotta said in his book,Leading Imperfectly, “be real around those who follow you, so they can see a realistic path to success.” Don’t switch up who you are because others might be judging. Stay the authentic course. Others will see how being true to yourself is an empowering and successful way to live life.
Be optimistic
The burger from the cafeteria may not be the best but that doesn’t mark the end of the world. Turn potentially unappealing situations into delicious moments. Even if it was a rough semester or year, look forward to turning it around. If people weren’t supportive don’t get down. Trust your planning and instincts and the best options will present themselves.
People Pleasing or Nah?
Helping others achieve goals and working towards a greater good are wonderful acts. Attempting to please every single person is impossible. I don’t often advocate the “oh well” mentality, but sometimes that’s how you must react. When you’re sacrificing your own happiness just to assure that others will like you is problematic. Just hit em with the Kanye shrug. Or in this case the Hans Landa shrug.
Be excited.
This might be your last semester as a college student or the end of your first year. It could have a been a great Fall 2015 or a maybe it was a down few months. The new year doesn’t mean necessarily mean new endeavors. 2016 should serve as an extension and continuation of the dopeness you’ve already been doing. No matter where you once stood, it’s time to stand somewhere else. Stand next to excellence and excitement. Bring all sorts of new energy to the table. Raise that bar and get everyone else around you hyped to be a part of this journey.
When it comes to leadership remember.
Stay trill, folks.
