7 Things You Can GO Do Besides Pokemon GO

Before you even continue to read beyond this point, understand that I am NOT a POKEMON GO fan. NO, I’m not a Grinch. I’m all for having fun , and getting lost in happiness and all of that jazz. Trust me. But as a mom, and as someone who , let’s just say, ‘pays attention’ , this game SCARES me. So here’s some things you can GO do besides play POKEMON GO
1. GO…Do Your Research
If you’ve done any research at all , you’d know that POKEMON GO asks you to grant permission to an unbelievable amount of account access and unless you are an iPhone user, you probably weren’t even notified. So what does this mean to you? It means that after downloading the game , you would enable the app to read and send email as you, have access to your google drive, photos etc. Not to mention how easy it’s GPS tracking allows criminals to easily lure their prey. Have any accidents happened? Well , a few stabbings , an ambush or two..oh yeah, someone fell off a 50 ft cliff in San Diego , a couple dozen car accidents..etc. etc. All in the name of Squirtle.
2. GO…Watch other people play.
I challenge you to go to a park in your town, or a place where you’d suspect a lot of POKEMON Trainers would be, and just watch. I did this by mistake actually, when the game first came out a few weeks ago. It’s what made me decide that I wouldn’t play or allow my son to play either. I couldn’t understand why everyone looked more zombified than usual. Yes. I said ‘zombified’. I’m used to adults being nose deep in their iPhones, frivolously reading Facebook posts about people they could care less about. Sure. That’s nothing new. This was up a notch, or ten. I saw unsupervised children, often in groups but always completely oblivious of their surroundings, catching Pokemon. Scary. I thought about how people predicted that one day we’d be zombies, and honestly , I pictured more of a Walking Dead type of zombie , but this made even more sense. Control us and our children with a “harmless” game so we don’t even know what hit us. I get it.
3. GO… Vegan ( or on a better diet in general)
Did you know that Veganism prevents diseases such as cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, arthritis , osteoporosis, and more? It eliminates body odor , and is responsible for stronger nails, hair, less intense PMS symptoms, and migraine relief?
Not willing to stop eating animal products completely? I get it. It ‘ain’t’ for everybody. But by simply reducing, dairy, meat and eggs, can alleviate allergy symptoms and improve your physical and mental health overall.
Now when’s the last time Charizard did any of that for you? I’ll wait.
4. GO…Read a book
It’s HARD to put our phones down. Even before Pokemon GO, how easy is it to go from FB, to IG , to twitter, to Buzzfeed, back to IG , to Worldstar, to FB and twitter once more? Remember that saying ,”READING IS FUNDAMENTAL” ? It’s true. Aside from Facebook status’ and Instagram captions quoting the latest Drake song, when’s the last time you actually picked up a book you weren’t required to read? Reading daily improves your writing, analytical skills, vocabulary, memory, and of course, your knowledge. So yeah, DO more of that.
Yes. Catching Pokemon can definitely make you zone out. Even enough to fall off a 50 ft cliff, or smash right into a parked police car. But actually sitting still, and mediating for 10 minutes daily, can impact your life tremendously. Meditation increases your focus, your immunity (50% less disease) , and significantly decreases depression, anxiety , and a long list of other mental disorders.
6. GO …Missing and Be Present
Not literally missing, of course, but totally present for sure. Can you take technology out of your life for a day or two, or even more if you’re able to? How attached are we to our phones, televisions, and social media networks? We can’t eat a meal without taking a picture first. I’m totally guilty of it as well. What would you do without a screen 10 inches away from your face? (After withdrawal of course) Paint a picture? Cook? Reorganize your closet? Maybe get people to come out to a program the old fashioned way; like word of mouth. Try it , and see what happens. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.
7. GO…Do Community Service
I mean honestly, we’ve all turned on the news lately, and we see / hear the atrocities happening every single day. Are you doing your part? Find an organization you’d feel happy to back and get out there and DO something! If by any chance you can’t find something you like …CREATE it.
Now look, if you absolutely MUST play POKEMON GO, do you. Don’t let me steal your joy. Be aware of your surroundings. As a student make sure to catch em all but don’t catch that F in History class. If you have children, make sure they understand the repercussions to being as completely oblivious and the game promotes you to be. But take into account the other things you can GO do!
